The German Shepherd dogs belonging to President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were taken back last week to the Biden family home in Delaware following a “biting incident,” a report said.

CNN reported one of the dogs, Major Biden, demonstrated aggressive behavior at the White House and had a “biting incident” with a member of White House security. The report quoted two sources with knowledge of the incident.

Though the victim’s condition and other details are not yet known, the situation was serious enough to warrant the removal of the dogs, the report said.

Three-year-old Major Biden, adopted November 2018 from a Delaware animal shelter, was the first shelter rescue dog ever to live in the White House.

Bidens bringing dogs to the White House marked a return to a long-held tradition wherein Presidents and their families brought in their pets with them. Former President Donald Trump and his family did not have any pets for the four years they lived in the White House. Barack and Michelle Obama had Bo and Sunny, two Portuguese Water Dogs, while Bill and Hillary Clinton had a Chocolate Labrador called Buddy and a cat named Socks.

The dog has reportedly displayed aggressive behavior on earlier occasions too, including jumping, barking, and charging at staff and security. The Bidens have another dog, 13-year-old Champ, which has slowed down due to age.

The report adds that a person familiar with the dogs’ schedule confirmed they were in Delaware, adding “they have been known to stay there with minders when the first lady is out of town”.

The dogs moved into the White House days after Biden took charge.

First Lady Jill Biden’s press secretary Michael LaRosa had then told  CNN that “Champ is enjoying his new dog bed by the fireplace, and Major loved running around on the South Lawn.”

Champ has been with the Biden family since December 2008 — weeks after Biden became Barack Obama’s vice president-elect, while Major was adopted in 2018, months before Biden announced he would run for President in 2020. Both dogs have a huge fan base on social media.
